אני מאוד שמחה שמכל המפיות שספגו את השמן הרב שניגר מכל הסופגניות והלביבות אחת הצליחה לשרוד ולהכנס לאוסף. זהו בהחלט נס חנוכה פרטי

Hanukka. A holiday of light, miracles, victory and so many other associations every Israeli kid growing in a Jewish environment can tell you from its sleep.
What this blog really cares about is the napkins role in this story, naturally.
So here we have a beautiful special napkin made by the great Mata food company we love so much!
As we already witnessed in other posts, Mata's food products are animated into little figurines. The mayo, margarine, mustard, Halavina (margarine with butter flavour) and of course the let's not forget the notorious veggie spread. All of them gather around to light the Menorah in the holiday ceremony.

I'm so glad that of all the napkins that had to absorb all the oil from the Latkes and Sufganiyot, one managed to survive and enter the collection. This is my little private holiday miracle.

Another Jewish year is here and this time I've got a festive napkin for you.
Mata's margarine with milk "Halavina" is promoted with the aid of little red riding hood saying "Hag Sameach" (Happy holiday) and the wolf disguised as grandma as the story goes.. All I can wish for the wolf is that there's no Halavina margarine for him in this basket..

Once again, a lovely napkin by Mata! This one is a special for the Purim holiday.
This carnaval like illustration shows a group of weird looking guys wearing Mata products as a costume for Purim..
The guy at the top, holding a bottle and dressed as a block of margarine, is completely wasted already..

Another guys, holding a head in his hands, is dressed as a tube of mustard . So weird!
The other two guys have a mayonaise and vegetable paste hats..

All the credit for this festive scene goes to Oded, as his name is signed at the bottom left.
As always, Mata's napkins show a forced connection between the "theme" of the napkin and the products they are supposed to advertise, yet colorful and super happy!

A Hebrew lesson 02 - שיעור בעברית 02

אם אתם זוכרים, לפני שנה בערך העלתי פוסט על פלייסמטס מנייר עם שיעורי עברית לתייר הסועד בבתי מלון. דרך מעניינת להרוג את הזמן ולהרחיב את הידע. כנראה החברים בכרמל מזרחי נתקנאו והדפיסו מפית נפלאה עם שיעור מזורז בעברית עם מילות מפתח בשפה כגון שמש, בננה וברנדי.. מעניין אם המסר הסבלימינלי עבד לאנשי כרמל מזרחי והקפיץ את המכירות של היקב באותה שנה

About a year ago I posted these lovely placemats with a Hebrew lesson printed on them.
A great way to kill time till dinner's on the table. The guys in Carmel Oriental (Mizrachi) probably thought it was a good idea and printed this awesome napkin with a quick lesson that includes some key words in Hebrew such as sun, banana and Brandy.. I wonder if it helped the winery sales jump in that year..

המפית היפהפיה הזו שהודפסה על ידי חברת צים נועדה לקהל המפליגים המשועמם

לעומת כרמל מזרחי, ההשקעה באוצר מילים רחב יותר ניכרת, יש גם תרגום לצרפתית ואפילו רשמו את אופן ההגייה. האיורים הנפלאים הנלווים למילים חמודים ממש ומצליחים לתת לנו שיעור קצר במגדר ברוח הסיקסטיז. כמו למשל האייקונים המלווים את המילים "הוא" ו"היא", או למשל האיור הפיגורטיבי יותר למילה "סליחה". אני מעכשיו אלמד לחכך קרסוליים בכל פעם שאני מתנצלת בפני מישהו

This beauty was printed by Zim navigation and was probably aimed to kick away the boredom while travelling in the sea. Unlike Carmel oriental, they put some more effort and added the translation to French the Hebrew pronunciation. The lovely illustrations manage to give us also a quick lesson in the 60's gender studies. Check out the illustrations for the words "he" and "she" or the illustration for "sorry".
From now on I'll learn to rub my ancles whenever I apologize to a man.

ושוב איתנו  מטעמי מטע  במפית נפלאה לחג  הסוכות. לפי הנוכחות המאסיבית שלהם באוסף, נראה כי הם השקיעו במפיות יותר מכל חברה אחרת. מצד שני הם לא קיימים יותר אז כנראה הפרסום על מפית לא ממש עובד
במקרה זה עיצוב המפית מעט פחות שגרתי מהרגיל. כבר התרגלתי  לקומפוזיציות עם איור או לוגו במרכז ואילו הפעם נראה שניסו משהו מעט אחר ואסימטרי. התוצאה יצאה מעט מקושקשת אך חיננית בתמימותה ומתחברת יופי לתוכנה המוזר
ידידנו מר חרדל מפוסט  ראש השנה מופיע גם הפעם כשהוא אוחז בדגל לכבוד שמחת תורה ובידו הפנויה מצביע על הלוגו של מטע. בשולי המפית מאוירות שתי סוכות
באחת חגיגת אלכוהול צוהלת של שני עבדקנים ובשניה תלמיד קופיפי למראה ומורה חמור סבר עם ספר לימוד. מיותר לציין שלא נראית אף אישה באופק. את כל הנוי הזה מעטרים ארבעת המינים בהדפסה מושקעת במיוחד של ארבעה צבעים. כל שנותר הוא לקוות שמר חרדל ידע לבחור להתארח בסוכה הנכונה

Once again, a lovely napkin from Mata.
This time the occasion is the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.
The 4 colors design of this napkin is a little different from the usual and maybe even a little weird.. I'm pretty much used to the central compositions of an illustration or a logo in the middle, but this is not the case. We can see our friend from the last post, Mr. mustard holding a Torah flag for the holiday and pointing at the logo, while in the other part we can see 2 Sukkot with happy lodgers.
In the first a couple of happy dudes sipping wine and in the second a monkey looking pupil with his teacher.
No woman in sight of course.. All I can hope for our friend Mr. mustard is that he'll pick the right Sukka to pass the holida.

מפית הורסת בריאות לכבוד ראש השנה מסדרת המפיות המופלאה של חברת מטע

משעשע לראות איך הצליחו לדחוס למפית  אחת כל כך הרבה נורמות שפשטו את הרגל במרוצת העשורים האחרונים: המשפחה הישראלית הקלאסית עם אבא פקיד, אמא גנדרנית, שלושה ילדים כשלאחד כובע טמבל וכמובן הכלב והחתול ההכרחיים

כל אחד מהם מייצג את חלקו במשפחה הבריאה שמורכבת ממוצרים שהבריאות היא ממנה והלאה: מרגרינה, מיונז (אמיתי!) והזוועה הקולינרית ממרח צמחי. אולי החרדל היחידי שיוצא נקי כאן אבל יש סיכוי שבניגוד למיונז הוא איננו אמיתי
כל שנותר הוא לאחל לקוראי הבלוג ארוחת חג של בריאות שלא יהיה בה ולו אחד מהפרודוקטים האלה בחיק משפחתם הבריאה. חג שמח

Another brilliant napkin by the late Mata food company. It's quite amazing to see how 

the creators managed to squeeze into this napkin so many ideals that are long gone.
Starting with the super straight Israeli family: dad works in the office, mom is being pretty, the 3 kids with one of them wearing the Israeli classic Tembel hat, and let's not forget the obligatory cat and dog. 

Each of the family members represents his part in the family of health by being dressed like one of Mata's products. Of course, healthy is the last thing that can be said about those products: Margarine, (real!) mayonaise and the horrible of all - the vegetarian spread.. Maybe the mustard is the only one to come out clean though there's a chance that unlike the mayo, it's not real!
All I can say is that I wish all the blog readers a happy new Jewish year and may your holiday dinner never have any of those products involved. Hag Sameach!

המרגרינה של מטע, המתחרה של גולד-בנד מהפוסט הקודם, מצדיעה לדגל הישראלי באמצעות איור של חפיסת מרגרינה המעוצבת כחייל מן השורה עם נעליים צבאיות מגושמות וכומתה דמויית הלוגו .של מטע. אין ספק שזה היה להיט בקרב עקרות הבית הפטריוטיות

So, Israel has just celebrated its 64th birthday yesterday and it's an awesome chance to upload another napkin that glorifies IDF in the 60's naive style. 

Back then, when the Israeli army was a common visual reference, nobody thought there's something weird or unusual in using soldiers, pilots, sailors, paratroopers and warcraft as a commercial for margarine (yep. margarine once again!).
Mata margarine, the competitor of Gold-band margarine from the last post, salutes the Israeli flag with a soldier shaped margarine pack. A sure hit for any patriotic housewife.

Pure awesomeness! A series of 4 funky napkins by Thelma Blue-Band - the food company that is responsible to beauties such as Gold band margarine and instant sachleb.
All prints are in 3 colors showing off a food product and an illustration that logically has something to do with it. The mushroom soup has an illustration of a mushroom, but also a dwarf is included.
I guess that was the only mushroom image in the designer's stock. Also, a bird and instant tomato soup. Why? Because.

This 4 colors print is for Mamtak - cocoa spread manufactured by Mata food industries.
I have no idea how this spread tasted, but those ducks all over the napkin are not a good sign.
I don't know which one is a better choice, the crying duck (ugly duckling probably) or the soldier duck with the beret hat on the left. The one at the bottom seems like a nice dude, yet, no chocolate spread crave here.

Got a flight tonight

In the running year I've been finding myself up in the air sipping Bloody Maries and chocking on dust flavored marble cakes more than I could have ever imagined. Today, just recovering from a very long flight back to Tokyo, from the deeps of my jet lag haze,  I found some lovely napkins from the 60's skies.

El Al airlines, Israel's flag carrier's logo in his 60's version (just before it was recreated by the great designer Dan Reisinger in 1971). A simple one color print for this airplane napkin. Simple and elegant!

Another napkin from a past El Al flight. This time you can see the logo after (or before?) some changes. The basic structure of the logo was mostly kept, but in this version the logo was built up from star-of-David fractals.. 

On the other side of the napkin you can also find the nicely adapted Hebrew logo.

The last flight napkin comes from Arkia - Israel's biggest inner flights company of those days.

The logo has also changed since, but still keeps the orange and blue principle.

I have no idea what the national electricity company and a gas company need a promotional napkin for, but in the old days that was a good way to reach the people.
What is more typical for those days is the illustration of the happy and bashful housewife serving her faceless husband a hot drink while he's reading the newspaper after a long day at the rat-race.
Thanks to electricity, she can serve the hot tea faster than before and keep smiling. Thank you electricity!

On the second napkin for the Israeli gas company Pazgaz, you can see how to make a girl sky-rocket with joy. Marriage AND gas!

Yep those napkins seem funny today though sometimes I feel those messages aren't completely gone. Just became more sophisticated.
