סדר פסח הוא אירוע טעון ודחוס לעייפה בשלל תכנים שבכל יום רגיל היה אפשר לחפור ולהרהר בכל אחד ואחד מהם למשך זמן רב: העניין עם העבדות והחירות, יציאת מצרים, כל מיני רבנים בני זומא שמתפלפלים, שירים עם מילים חצי סתומות שכולם רק יודעים להתחיל ולא ממש לסיים. בזמן שנושאים כבדים ומעוררי מחשבה אלה נשלפים מהבוידעם הקרוי הגדה, מתרחשת המציאות

משפחה שלמה יושבת מסביב לשולחן ועושה לעצמה חשבון נפש וספירת מלאי. מה נשתנה יחסית לשנה שעברה: מי התחתן, מי התגרש, מי התפגר, מי ברח לחו"ל, מי נראה נורא, מי נראית נפלא וכל זה קורה בזמן שכולם מתענים ברעב כבד מול שולחן הערוך במתאבנים העגומים ביצה קשה ומצה

 השלב שתמיד נגע לליבי במהלך הסדר היה החלק שבו מגיעים לשיר חד גדיא. אחרי שהכרס מלאה והמוח צף בכוהל הטקסטים בהגדה כבר אינם אויב. אפילו שיר כחד גדיא שמסתיים בידיעה המשמחת שכל המסובין לשולחן יקבלו ביקור נימוסין ממלאך המוות בשלב כלשהו בחייהם לא נשמע כזה גרוע

המפית המאויירת הזו  המתארת את המשתתפים בשיר חד גדיא כנראה פיארה את שולחנות סדר הפסח בעבר במעין ממנטו מורי מנייר המזכיר לנו שאולי אמור להיות אביב בחוץ, אבל בסופו של יום המוות הוא הבוס

The Jewish Passover Seder is one of the most exhausting events in the family calendar.
The old stories in the Haggadah mixed with the tensed family reunion around a table of people just waiting to stop reading and start eating already. This combination can be very delicate!
After finishing the eating and drinking part it's a completely different story.
Everybody is pretty drunk petting their belly and ready to sing the last song for the seder: Chad Gadya.

This napkin describes the circle of life and death (well.. mostly death) as portrayed in the song. A little memento mori on a piece of paper that was used at the Israeli Seder dinner.
Wiping the Matzo crust from your mouth with an illustration of the angel of death sounds very macabre but also very optimistic is a way.

Miracles and wonders - נסים ונפלאות

Hanukka. A holiday of light, miracles, victory and so many other associations every Israeli kid growing in a Jewish environment can tell you from its sleep.
What this blog really cares about is the napkins role in this story, naturally.
So here we have a beautiful special napkin made by the great Mata food company we love so much!
As we already witnessed in other posts, Mata's food products are animated into little figurines. The mayo, margarine, mustard, Halavina (margarine with butter flavour) and of course the let's not forget the notorious veggie spread. All of them gather around to light the Menorah in the holiday ceremony.

I'm so glad that of all the napkins that had to absorb all the oil from the Latkes and Sufganiyot, one managed to survive and enter the collection. This is my little private holiday miracle.

Vacation in Israel - עוד חופשה בישראל

Hagoshrim - at the sixties     הגושרים - שנות ה60 

היום לא צריך הרבה תירוצים בשביל לצאת לחופשה. מספיק יום מחורבן בעבודה ששולח אותנו לקנות כרטיסי טיסה לפריז כדי לפצות על הדכדכת. בעבר כמובן העניינים נראו קצת אחרת וטיול לחוצלארץ היה פריבילגיה לברי המזל שיכלו להרשות לעצמם את התענוג. חלק גדול מהאוכלוסיה המקומית העדיף להעביר את החופשה באחד מבתי ההארחה או המרגוע באחד הקיבוצים או המושבים הרבים בארץ. החופשה הסולידית כללה חדר צנוע, ארוחה לא יותר מסבירה, שקט יחסי ובעיקר, גישה לבריכת הקיבוץ

מקום שעדיין פעיל עד היום הוא בית ההארחה בקיבוץ הגושרים (היום הוא מלון) ממנו מגיעה המפית מעל המעוטרת באיור שמש באווירה שבטית ברוח הסיקסטיז

Today we don't need many excuses to book a flight to a vacation and run away from it all. Even a crappy day at the office is a good-enough motivation to have a weekend in Paris. In the past things were a little different naturally, and a flight abroad was a pleasure for the privileged. Most of the Israelis could afford themselves a much less glamorous vacation in one of the guest houses in the many Kibbutzim or Moshavim. It included mostly a modest room, a reasonable meal, peace and quiet and most importantly, an access to the local swimimg pool!

שלושים שנים קדימה מביאות אותנו לתחתית הנייר ולמפית נוספת משנות ה-90 שבהן אפשר לראות שאייקון הברושים והגשר שרדו, אבל אם מציצים באתר האינטרנט הנוכחי שלהם אפשר לראות שהלוגו ששרד מכולם הוא דווקא המכוער מכולם..

These 2 napkins and coaster are from Kibbuz Hagoshrim. The guest house is still here with us today as you can see in the website, and it's lovely 60's naive image of the sun was replaced with the ugly logo from the 90's.. The original logo with the cypress, bridge and water stream didn't survive..

בבית ההארחה של קיבוץ כפר גלעדי התארחתי לפני שנה וחצי וחילצתי משם מפית עדכנית. בית המרגוע הפך להיות מלון והאיור הנאיבי של בת הים הוחלף באיור רנדומלי שאפילו אינו הלוגו הנוכחי של המלון

מאז התמונה על הגלויה היפה משנות השישים גם די השתנה הנוף אבל שיטוט באיזור גילה שהבריכה הזו עדיין קיימת, למרות שהיתה סגורה בזמן שהייתי שם

בכל מקרה, אני במקומם לא הייתי עוזבת את הלוגו המשגע עם בת הים

The groovy 60's at Kfar Giladi guest house

I was lucky enough to find myself in Kfar Giladi hotel about a year and a half ago, and put my hands on a napkin from the dining room. Of course the new napkin is so disappointing when you see the old one from the 60's with the groovy mermaid illustration. That's too bad they didn't stick with that and changed the hotel's image to this.
BTW, though the view changed in the past 50 years, the pool in this lovely postcard still exists!

שתי המפיות היפהפיות האלה מגיעות מבית ההארחה של קיבוץ אילת השחר שכיום כבר לא קיים והפך, מסתבר, לבית קליטה לעולים מאתיופיה בתחילת שנות ה-2000

בימי הזוהר של המקום השקיעו בתדמית ויצרו את הלוגו המתוק עם האילה המקפצת ובנוסף את המפית המאויירת עם החתיכה העירונית המסתלבטת על כיסא נוח בין קלישאות קיבוץ כמו מגדל מים וטרקטור. אין ספק שהעבר נראה זוהר למרות ניחוחות הרפת

I love this gazelle!

These 2 lovely napkins come from Kibbutz Ayelet Hashahar guest house. This place was closed in the early 2000's and today it's an integration center for Ethiopian immigrants. In the golden days of this place, it seems like they've put a lot of thought at the image of the guest house with the galloping gazelle. (The literal meaning of the name is "Dawn gazelle" - a biblical name for the star of Venus).
Also the naive illustration of the sexy lady by the cows and tractor is adorable and makes you wonder how smelly was this vacation exactly..

הפעם כיפה אדומה מגוייסת לפרסום חלבינה - המרגרינה עם החלב. גוש של חסימת עורקים עם טעם מפוקפק שהיה התחליף המקובל לחמאה בימים של מבחר מצומצם במכולת
אני יכולה רק לקוות בשביל הזאב שיש בסלסלה הזו כל דבר חוץ מחפיסת חלבינה

Another Jewish year is here and this time I've got a festive napkin for you.
Mata's margarine with milk "Halavina" is promoted with the aid of little red riding hood saying "Hag Sameach" (Happy holiday) and the wolf disguised as grandma as the story goes.. All I can wish for the wolf is that there's no Halavina margarine for him in this basket..

שלא תגידו שהבלוג מתעלם מגויים, הנה מפית החשודה כתוצרת חוץ שהשתרבבה לאוסף
אפשר מייד להבחין בהדפסה המדוייקת בלא פחות מ-5 גוונים, ובצבעים הנהדרים הבוהקים
גם אחרי 50 שנה
אין יותר מידי טעם לבוא בטענות לתעשיית הדפוס העברית של שנות ה-60, אבל זה סימן די מובהק לכך שמפית זו פשוט הובאה לארץ מטיול כלשהו לחו"ל

Mapiot blog also cherishes non-Jewish holidays as you can see.
This one, found in the collection, is pretty notable fot its accurate print and also the very bright and saturated colors of the print that lasted about 50 years.
No dis about the Israeli print industry of the 60's, but it's pretty obvious this napkin arrived from a country abroad.. Happy holydays!

ושוב פסח כאן איתנו. בכל מקום הפרסומות דוחקות בנו לרכוש מתנות לחג לאהובינו וגם לפעמים לאנשים שאנחנו לא ממש מכירים, תוך שהן משתמשות בחמרים מן המקורות

בין אם זה משה רבינו ששובר את לוחות הברית באמצע סופר מרקט, או סוכן ביטוח במצרים העתיקה, סיפור יציאת מצרים וההגדה הם מקור רעיוני וויזואלי מצויין לקישור זריז בין חג הפסח למוצרי צריכה

מפית מופלאה זו של מטע משתמשת בסיפור ארבעת הבנים מתוך ההגדה כדי לפרסם את מוצר הדגל שלה - המרגרינה. אותו בלוק של שומן צמחי אותו הזכרנו רבות בבלוג זוכה להבחר על ידי הבן החכם הלבוש כרב עבדקן האוחז במקל הליכה. הרשע לעומת זאת הגיע אלינו ככל הנראה מחג פורים או מסיפורי עלי באבא. הוא אוחז בחרב, שפם עבות וחזות מזרחית גנרית מהעבר. בשלב זה הצופה נע בכיסא באי נוחות, אבל כאמור מדובר בסיקסטיז

הבן התם וזה שאינו יודע לבחור הם בפשטות שני חילונים. התם די חסר אפיון, אבל זה שאינו יודע לבחור חובש כובע טמבל ולבוש בגדי קיבוצניק

אין ספק שבמפית פרסומית זו האמן העומד מאחורי יצירה זו עשה שימוש בסטראוטיפים לא מתוחכמים במיוחד ואפילו פוגעניים בעידן הפוליטיקלי קורקט שאנו מנסים לתחזק. מה שמדהים הוא שכל זה קרה בעצם בשביל למכור מרגרינה. מוצר לא מתוחכם בדיוק כמו המסר שהוא מעביר

 

Passover is here again, and everywhere you can see those commercials urging us to buy presents for our loved ones (and sometimes for people we don't really know) to celebrate the holiday..

Many of this season's commercials find a bucket full of visual references and ideas at the Haggadah and the Passover stories. It could be Moses breaking the 2 tablets of law in the supermarket, or an insurance agent dressed as if we were in ancient Egypt.
Everything goes.

This wonderful napkin by Mata also uses a story from the Haggadah - The four sons - to promote its prime product: the margarine. This block of fat which we mentioned quite a lot in the blog, is the choice of the wise son - an old Rabbi with a beard and a walking cane.
The wicked son on the other hand, is some sort of an Arabic caricature coming straight from Ali-Baba tales. This makes the viewer move uncomfortably in his chair, but as we already know, we're talking about the sixties..
The other 2 guys are simply non religious types. The simple son is not too characterized, but the son who cannot choose (in the origins it's the son who cannot ask) is dressed as
a Kibbutznik with the shorts and a Tembel hat.

Now doubt this commercial napkin is far from being in the politicly correct standarts of our current world. What's really astonishing is all those bold stereotypes are used to sell a simple product such as margarine.. As simple as the message in this napkin.

Purim goes wild - עדלאידע

והפעם מטע, מקור לא נדלה למפיות נפלאות, מפגיזה עם מפית מיוחדת לפורים

כמו ברוב המפיות של מטע, החיבור בין המוצרים לבין החג שלכבודו הודפס המפית תלוש קמעה ומאולץ למדי אך תמיד צבעוני ושמח

Once again, a lovely napkin by Mata! This one is a special for the Purim holiday.
This carnaval like illustration shows a group of weird looking guys wearing Mata products as a costume for Purim..
The guy at the top, holding a bottle and dressed as a block of margarine, is completely wasted already..

Another guys, holding a head in his hands, is dressed as a tube of mustard . So weird!
The other two guys have a mayonaise and vegetable paste hats..

All the credit for this festive scene goes to Oded, as his name is signed at the bottom left.
As always, Mata's napkins show a forced connection between the "theme" of the napkin and the products they are supposed to advertise, yet colorful and super happy!

מפית הורסת בריאות לכבוד ראש השנה מסדרת המפיות המופלאה של חברת מטע

משעשע לראות איך הצליחו לדחוס למפית  אחת כל כך הרבה נורמות שפשטו את הרגל במרוצת העשורים האחרונים: המשפחה הישראלית הקלאסית עם אבא פקיד, אמא גנדרנית, שלושה ילדים כשלאחד כובע טמבל וכמובן הכלב והחתול ההכרחיים

כל אחד מהם מייצג את חלקו במשפחה הבריאה שמורכבת ממוצרים שהבריאות היא ממנה והלאה: מרגרינה, מיונז (אמיתי!) והזוועה הקולינרית ממרח צמחי. אולי החרדל היחידי שיוצא נקי כאן אבל יש סיכוי שבניגוד למיונז הוא איננו אמיתי
כל שנותר הוא לאחל לקוראי הבלוג ארוחת חג של בריאות שלא יהיה בה ולו אחד מהפרודוקטים האלה בחיק משפחתם הבריאה. חג שמח

Another brilliant napkin by the late Mata food company. It's quite amazing to see how 

the creators managed to squeeze into this napkin so many ideals that are long gone.
Starting with the super straight Israeli family: dad works in the office, mom is being pretty, the 3 kids with one of them wearing the Israeli classic Tembel hat, and let's not forget the obligatory cat and dog. 

Each of the family members represents his part in the family of health by being dressed like one of Mata's products. Of course, healthy is the last thing that can be said about those products: Margarine, (real!) mayonaise and the horrible of all - the vegetarian spread.. Maybe the mustard is the only one to come out clean though there's a chance that unlike the mayo, it's not real!
All I can say is that I wish all the blog readers a happy new Jewish year and may your holiday dinner never have any of those products involved. Hag Sameach!

המרגרינה של מטע, המתחרה של גולד-בנד מהפוסט הקודם, מצדיעה לדגל הישראלי באמצעות איור של חפיסת מרגרינה המעוצבת כחייל מן השורה עם נעליים צבאיות מגושמות וכומתה דמויית הלוגו .של מטע. אין ספק שזה היה להיט בקרב עקרות הבית הפטריוטיות

So, Israel has just celebrated its 64th birthday yesterday and it's an awesome chance to upload another napkin that glorifies IDF in the 60's naive style. 

Back then, when the Israeli army was a common visual reference, nobody thought there's something weird or unusual in using soldiers, pilots, sailors, paratroopers and warcraft as a commercial for margarine (yep. margarine once again!).
Mata margarine, the competitor of Gold-band margarine from the last post, salutes the Israeli flag with a soldier shaped margarine pack. A sure hit for any patriotic housewife.
